Brown Entrepreneurs Brunch!

January 17, 2010

On Sunday  morning, 10 alumni spanning the class of ‘74 to ‘07 (and 1 current student) gathered at Lalitha Swart’s home in Palo Alto to have brunch and discuss their entrepreneurial ventures in the Bay Area.  To begin, everyone took turns introducing themselves and their startup.  Before long, conversation started following as market trends and the challenges of individual projects were discussed.

This was the first Carberry Event of 2010.  A great start! Many thanks to the Swart’s for their hospitality!

Brown is Green Happy Hour

November 17, 2009

Last night, 35 alumni gathered at Shotwells in the Mission to connect over environmental issues. Many thanks to Robin Averbeck ‘06, Natalya Blumenfeld ‘06, and Amie Vaccaro ‘06 for organizing.

Entrepreneurs Dinner

November 4, 2009

Tuesday night, a small group of Brown Entrepreneurs gathered at Sauce in Hayes Valley for some lively conversation about their businesses, ranging from spice grinding to solar energy. A great deal of advice was exchanged over the course of the meal about how to start and effectively grow a small business.

This dinner was by invitation, which was a first for the Carberry Club. Many thanks to Michael Joseph ‘02 for hosting and bringing together such an interesting and helpful group.

Family BBQ

September 20, 2009

Frank Cialone ‘87  & Mimi and their kids welcomed 5 alums ranging from the class of ‘87 to ‘04 to their home Sunday afternoon for some wine and homestyle cooking.  Many coincidences were discovered as 3 alums from the class of ‘87 pieced together how they never managed to meet at Brown but had common friends and had taken the same classes.  Others discussed their experience working in the tech sector and others in real estate.  A good time was had as the fog rolled in through Noe Valley and the kids played with their toys (some alumni played too).

Mexican Independence Day

September 13, 2009

Maria Moreno (‘98) welcomed 6 alums ranging from the class of ‘73 to ‘07 as well as 4 friends and family into her beautiful Eureka Valley home.  The Carberry Club dinner was in honor of Mexican Independence Day, so we enjoyed margaritas and played Loteria (sort of like Bingo but in Spanish with pictures) for quarters.  The meal was delicious, the views were superb, and the company was best of all.

Young Alumni Gathering

September 3, 2009

Tim Bentley and Joon Nak Choi host a gathering for young alumni on Thursday evening in San Francisco.  5 alumni attended spanning the class of ‘99 to ‘09 and discussed seriously the merits of the claims of a recent GQ article. We also reflected on our recent interviewing for BASC and our own times at Brown. After drinks and snacks at Tim’s, the group walked to the Lower Haight for sausages and drinks at Toronado.

Trustee Emeritus Jonathan Speed hosted a Carberry Club gathering at his home in SOMA.  The wine and cheese party was a great event drawing alums from multiple decades and multiple walks of life.  A big thank you to Jonathan for hosting this event.

CleanTech Dinner

August 11, 2009

The Carberry Club organized it’s first dinner for a group of alums in the Bay area who are interested in CleanTech.  9 alums attended.

There was a great turnout with alumni who are in this space and we talked about a myriad of topics ranging from green buildings, renewable energy consulting, green software, investment banking, transportation, solar, and water. A great way to bring together people that share a common interest!

Summer Alfresco

July 31, 2009

9 alums and 1 spouse joined Monica Rocchino at her beautiful home in the Oakland hills for a Carberry Club dinner on Friday.

Dinner was scrumptious – Italian potluck style, with antipasti served on the porch before sunset. A good time was had by all. We discussed all things Brown, Bay Area and Second Life until late.  Thanks Monica!

Thanks to Mike O’Neil ‘73 for hosting brunch last Sunday.  10 alumni attended.  Here’s what Mike had to say:

Brunch was just wonderful.  EVERYONE showed up as promised. It was a fascinating and diverse lot, precisely as I expected it would be. I think I calculated a 42 year span in graduation years. The quality of the conversation matched the high caliber crowd. I was President of the Brown Club in Arizona for 20+ years (and still spend much of my time there) and intend to suggest this format to my successor as something she might want to consider. This was a terrific idea — I hope you continue the program.
